His Last

Sarah's eyes lingered on the grazing pair. It was a match she was both excited and saddened by. She had managed to secure a breeding with DD Covergirl, a filly whose career she'd followed with interest so when the chance came to lease her, well she had leapt at it. The choice of stallion was tough, Mirkwood had gathered a selection of top quality stock.

It was then that Dr. McKinley had come into her office, a grim look on his face and handed her the stallions' check up files. Midnight Glory's lay on top and the numbers spoke heavy words. The black stallion's fertility was rapidly declining.

"Will he be ok for one more season?"

The young vet shrugged, "Maybe, definitely not a full book of mares though."

"Well, let's hope he can get at least this one in foal."

The breeding season had come and gone. The six mares bred had all been confirmed in foal to Sarah's relief and now it was time to do the undoable. She had spoken to Rachel and the girl, actually young woman now, had been disappointed that Glory's stud career was over but thrilled that she'd be given her horse to compete on. Sarah hadn't been able to keep Rachel off his back since he'd returned to Mirkwood from the track; she'd taken him for rides across the hilly trails, done some light schooling and jumping and in general just played with him. Being an event rider herself, Sarah could see the colt had talent to take on a second career as a show jumper or eventer but he'd been too valuable a stallion to risk injury.

Now that he was going to be gelded however, there was nothing stopping him. Sarah had thought of taking him on herself, but the stallion and Rachel had a bond and she knew he'd do anything for her. And so a new chapter began...
