Caribou Hunt

It was bitterly cold. Kayu could almost believe she was turning into ice. The thick pines sheltered them from the worst of the storm raging above. Wind howled in anger, sending flurries of snowflakes through the laden branches. The wolverine-marked tokota bounded ahead, pouncing on the piles of snow that got dislodged when the wind moved their branches too much.

At least one of them was having fun. Striga paced  alongside her and Tiri, shaking her barred head to dislodge the snow that settled onto her fur.

The storm really couldn’t have waited. Kayu cursed and shook the ice from the fur of her coat. This was just miserable.

Ahead the flash of red against white distracted her, Tiri flicked his ears forward, tracking the younger male as he darted between the pines. Igi’s nose was to the ground, tipped tail wagging furiously. Tiri picked up his pace, Striga a tawny shadow beside him.

Kayu squinted through snowflake laden lashes. Caribou tracks. Recent, but disappearing beneath the new snow.

Igi had already gone, Striga following behind. Tiri chuffed, plumed breath hanging in the air a moment. Kayu pursed her lips, at the rate Igi was going the caribou would be alerted to their presence at any moment – still, the storm was on their side. She urged Tiri to follow.
