Kayu is so little D: and thanks to sealle for help with the hairs because argghsdjkklasdfh
It was supposed to be spring. Kayu scowled at her breath frosting in the air, a clear indicator that it wasn’t spring. What had happened to the changing of the seasons Kayu didn’t know. Well, she did – or could guess - but that didn’t stop her from hating whoever or whatever was responsible for this damned cold.
She buried her hands into Tiri’s mane as she rode through the naked birch forest which gradually was replaced by snow-laden pines as they moved away from the town by the river. Shivering she decided that the lining of her parka needed to get replaced, and added it to her list of things that needed doing.
Tiri chuffed when the barred female appeared beside them, pale green eyes flashing in the last rays of the sun. Kayu grinned at the brief friendship that had formed between the two tokotas. The trio moved silently through the woods. A nightingale sang further off.
Tiri stiffened beneath her, ears tilting back and a low growl rising in his throat. They had approached the edge of the forest and through the thinning trees, the shadows seemed to coalesce into a creature. It turned, stiff movement belying his age. Blind eyes somehow seemed to see through them. Nanook.
Tiri dropped his head, a low whine replacing the growl. The black tokota turned back to the mountain and the younger ones approached hesitantly. Nanook raised his head and sang as the sun set and the aurora began to dance in the clear sky.
Kayu dismounted, laying a hand on Tiri’s shoulder as her stepped up and let out his own song. Striga joined a heartbeat later. Goosebumps ran up Kayu’s arms, a shiver down her spine. The song of the tokotas was haunting, somewhat plangent but so primal it went directly to some primitive part of her being. It scared her, this blood song, as if she were experiencing it as her ancestors. When they were as much prey as the caribou they hunted not partners; when fire and sharp stones at the end of sticks were all that protected them against the Wild and the Wild challenged them.
The Wild sang to her. It told her to run. It called for her blood.
It was only when Tiri lowered his head, nudging her with his big nose that Kayu was pulled back to the present. She staggered as if she had run through the ages. Kayu nodded at her tokota, and he followed the other two as they sought to satisfy the bloodlust.
